What is a functional area
Functional areas are organizational sub-areas of a company in which certain tasks, responsibilities and processes are bundled. Each functional area contributes in its own way to ensuring that the overall organization achieves its goals. Typical functional areas are, for example, purchasing, production, sales, controlling, human resources or marketing.
Functional areas in the software world
In addition to the classic organizational functional areas of a company, there are also software functional areas. These are logically separate application areas within a software that digitally map certain tasks or processes.
Examples: In a project management tool, typical software functional areas include task management, resource planning, time recording and reporting. Each of these areas represents a specific function and can be used individually or combined with other functional areas.
Functional areas in the ERP system
In modern ERP systems (Enterprise Resource Planning), the organizational functional areas of a company are digitally mapped in the form of software functional areas or modules. The aim is not to allow the individual areas to work in isolation, but to integrate them. As a result, processes interlock, data is available centrally and decisions can be made more quickly and on a consistent information basis.
- Merchandise management
- Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
- Controlling
- Project management
- Production data acquisition
- Production planning and control (PPS)
It is particularly important for SMEs to select the right functional areas: While large corporations often require highly complex controlling or reporting functions, smaller companies tend to rely on lean core modules that can be flexibly expanded.
Why are functional areas important?
- Clarity and structure: You define responsibilities within the company.
- Efficiency: Tasks are bundled and processes standardized.
- Integration through ERP: With an ERP system, all functional areas can work together on one database.
